Experience Worth Sharing
Pettyjohn’s School of Textile Care grew out of our family’s cleaning business and our desire to share what we’ve learned with others in the industry.
Pettyjohn’s was established in 1989 and has spent decades professionally caring for carpets, rugs, upholstery, and specialty textiles.
During that time, we’ve learned that some things can be taught very well in a classroom, while other things make much more sense once you actually have the tools in your hands.
That’s one of the main reasons we created the school.
We wanted to provide education that combines the technical side of textile care with the practical experience of actually doing the work.
Our Approach to Training
We believe good training should help you understand why you’re doing something, not simply tell you how to do it.
Understanding fibers, chemistry, equipment, cleaning methods, potential problems, and the reasoning behind a process gives you a foundation to make better decisions when you’re working in the field.
But understanding the information is only part of it.
Whenever possible, we want students to see those principles demonstrated and then have an opportunity to practice them.
The goal isn’t simply to leave class knowing more than when you arrived. We want you to leave feeling more comfortable actually using what you’ve learned.
Real-World Experience
One of the advantages we bring to the classroom is that we’re still actively involved in the cleaning industry.
The things we teach aren’t based only on information we’ve read in a manual. They’re also influenced by the problems we’ve encountered, the textiles we’ve worked on, the technicians we’ve trained, and the lessons we’ve learned through years of running a cleaning business.
We also recognize that we’re never finished learning ourselves.
Our industry continues to change, and part of being a good instructor is remaining a student. We hope to create classes where people are comfortable asking questions, sharing experiences, and learning from one another.
